Freeman Park

Freeman Park: Carolina Beach’s Ultimate 4x4 Beach Experience

If you’re looking for a more adventurous, off-the-beaten-path beach day, Freeman Park is where Carolina Beach really shows off.

Unlike traditional beach access points, Freeman Park is a drive-on beach where you can bring your vehicle, set up for the day, and fully settle into your own private stretch of sand. It’s raw, relaxed, and a total local favorite.

Once you're on, you can:

  • Park right by the water
  • Set up tents, umbrellas, and grills
  • Spend the entire day (or even overnight) without packing up

It’s perfect for groups, families, or anyone who wants a more laid-back, customizable beach setup.

Highlights

Dogs are welcome year-round.

  • April 1 – Sept 30: dogs must be leashed.
  • Oct 1 – March 31: off-leash allowed if under voice control.

Overnight primitive camping used to be offered and remains a classic part of Freeman Park’s draw, but it’s currently suspended due to beach erosion and nourishment projects. Check current local updates before planning a camping trip.

Surf fishing is very popular here — anglers cast right from the beach. Crabbing or casting for minnows are also common beachside activities.

What to Know Before You Go

Freeman Park is amazing—but it’s not your typical beach access. A little prep goes a long way.

Before heading out:

  • You’ll need a 4-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle (no exceptions)
  • Purchase a daily or annual permit
  • Air down your tires for easier driving on sand
  • Check tide schedules before entering
  • Bring everything you need—there are no shops on the beach

This is part of the charm, but it also means planning ahead is key.
